On 24 November 2025, Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath. He succeeds Justice B. R. Gavai, who retired on 23 November 2025.
Justice Surya Kant will serve a tenure of about 15 months, until 9 February 2027, when he turns 65.
